Context is another way that we construct meaning out of what we sense. If we see a photograph of a dandelion seed on a plant, it fits within our expectations. Our thinking generally stops because there is nothing to interpret. The puzzle has been solved. But what happens when we see that same seed floating over a scale? The referent is broken, and the context no longer makes sense. We are challenged to think about both the seed and the scale in new ways, shuffling our interpretation of both objects and possibly brining new meaning to each one. Similarly, consider what happens in your mind when photographs are pared within the same frame. How does the context of multiple photographs inform your interpretation? What happens in between the photographs?
It is this mystery of consciousness and the individual interpretation of senses, especially visual, that is at the core of this work. How much of what we think we see is there, and much do we insert into our interpretation from our mind?
